Memorial Day
Boalsburg, PA - The Birthplace of Memorial Day
Memorial
Day has been celebrated each and every year in Boalsburg, Pa since
1864, during the Civil War when three local women went to the cemetery
and placed flowers and greens on the graves of loved ones. On Memorial
Day, in May 2000 a bronze monument of the three local ladies was
unveiled and dedicated. This monument, only the second in the state of
Pennsylvania dedicated to a National Holiday; the other being the
Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, is located along US 322 in the village of
Boalsburg, just across from the Pennsylvania Military Museum.
